Replacing Night Storage Heaters
Night storage heaters were developed to take advantage of an outdated electricity tariff known as Economy 7. This tariff provided electricity at a premium rate during the day and a cheaper rate at night which then created an opportunity for manufacturers such as Dimplex and Creda to begin manufacturing these night storage heaters specifically to be ‘charged-up’ with electricity during the night. When it’s time to warm the house, the storage heaters will stop charging and then start emitting heat throughout the day without drawing any power from the mains.
Nowadays, this heating solution isn’t great at all. Economy 7 was devised in the 1970’s but the electricity companies and how electricity is being produced have changed since then. Also, as technology has developed, power consumption during the day has too. Here in the 21st century, Economy 7 packages will always be associated with higher daytime rates causing bills to rise overall…not fall.
Are Night Storage Heaters still a good option?
Rarely are night storage heaters the best option for heating a home in modern times even if your house is not connected to the main gas network. The negative effects include:
- High energy bills due to daytime electricity use from cookers, fridges and other appliances.
- Cooler temperatures in the evenings as storage heaters run out of energy.
- Storage heaters will emit heat as they are charging wasting energy.
- Inability to react to sudden changes in temperature as energy is collected the night before.
- Controls are complicated and difficult to manage on a day-to-day basis.
So, if your existing night storage heater is coming to the end of its life, electric radiators are a much better option.
Why Besser Radiators are better
Modern electric radiators from Besser are a great upgrade from night storage heaters. Once switched on, the radiator can heat an average sized room in just 20 minutes and will then monitor the temperature and automatically turn ‘on and off’ to maintain a comfortable level of warmth.
Our electric radiator retains heat in the ceramic cells which can be gradually released meaning energy consumption is limited to just 15-20 minutes per hour in a well-insulated room. On top of this, they provide greater control of the heating of your home allowing only certain rooms to be heated at certain times to work around your lifestyle thus saving you money on wasted heat.
Electric radiators are a great replacement for existing night storage heaters as they can fit in perfectly with your current property infrastructure using the same power points.
